Alain Durand, principal technologist of Internet Corporation for Assigned Names & Numbers (ICANN) paid a visit to the NASSCOM Center of Excellence Gurugram, where there was a vibrant and informative exchange on the potential benefits of establishing standards to the current proprietary systems of firmware download for IOT devices, and the benefits of adopting IPv6 over IPv4.

Durand talks about challenges and benefits of IPv6 adoption at NASSCOM CoE

The roundtable was attended by representatives from ARICENT, DLINK, CDOT, CDAC and IIT Delhi apart from representation from ERNET, ICANN and CoE. Shri Rahul Gosain, director at the Ministry of Electronics and IT also attended.
Highlights of Roundtable
Discussion on OX (Object Exchange) RFC co-authored by Alain Durand and its potential benefits in setting standard to the current proprietary system of client-server communication for IOT devices.
Challenges of IPv6 adoption – Some of the challenges to IPv6 adoptions that were discussed are:
- Adoption of NAT has successfully obviated the lack of IPv4 addresses so far
- There continue to be question to the decision of reserving 64 lower bits to subnet and potential impact with any change in the future
- Problem with lack of IP packet fragmentation in IPv6

ICANN and CoE have partnered with IIT-Hyderabad to drive research related to using the Resource Record (RR) field of the Domain Name System (DNS) to deliver firmware updates. As part of this research engagement, the ICANN and CoE team (including IPv6 expert from ERNET) visited IIT Hyderabad and met the research team.
Alain shared his past experience in working on IPv6 as well as in working with various entities using IP for communication. There was robust discussion on how the RR field can be enhanced to include situations around different kind of upgrades required including application level, kernel level, OS level; upgrade compatibility on account of metadata and experimentations to focus on optimum utilization of resources.
