Portable bio medical refrigerator for storing vaccines

Current vaccine storage devices focus more on stockpile rather than transit to increase efficiency. Thus, volunteer and Anganwadi workers still rely on coffee-thermos flasks with ice-cubes to deliver temperature sensitive vials like Oral Polio Vaccine. The patent propopses a method for creating a portable bio medical refrigerator for storing vaccines while also controlling and monitoring the temperaure conditions.

About Company

Based on patent titled PORTABLE BIO MEDICAL REFRIGERATOR published By BLACKFROG TECHNOLOGIES PVT LTD

1 Introduction and key takeaways

Problem Statement:

The system used for keeping and distributing vaccines in good condition is called the "cold chain". The cold chain consists of a series of storage and transport links, all of which are designed to keep the vaccine at the correct temperature until it reaches the recipient from the manufacturer.

Till they reach the district hospitals, the vaccines are transported in expensive freezers and kept in refrigerators. But from a community health centre to a primary health centre in turn to a sub-health centre and subsequently to the recipient in the field, the vials are moved in low-cost cold boxes or with the help of beverage thermos flasks with ice-packs in them. This is the stage where the vaccines lose 75-83% potency due to exposure to heat.

Solution:

A portable vaccine carrier is designed to properly store the vaccines and ensure minimum heat loss during the vial removal process. A constrained cooling chamber can be provided to maximize insulation efficiency. This vaccine carrier can be used in places where there is a scarcity of electricity.

The patent proposes a method to implement a temperature-controlled, portable bio-medical refrigerator for storing and transporting vaccines.

Key takeaways of the patent:

1. A portable biomedical refrigerator for storing vaccines is provided. The temperature conditions within the refrigerator can be monitored and adjusted as per need.

2. A temperature sensing system for maintaining and monitoring the temperature inside the portable refrigerator is provided for the same.

3. A cloud monitoring system for communicating remotely with the portable refrigerator is also provided.

Improved design for flexible substrate

Flexible substrate is a type of substrate on which electronic circuit assemblies are mounted and pressure sensors are integrated within. Since it is usually made up of a single layer, there are high chances of a short circuit between components, which reduces the efficiency of the system. Further, the leakage current in the system increases due to lack of insulation. The patent proposes a method for creating an improved flexible substrate.

Monitoring system that alerts caregivers based on position of infant in cradle

Exisiting infant monitoring systems are used to monitor the infant using a microphone placed near to the infaant. But there is no such monitoring system to check the infant's posture and position in the cradle. This patent describes an infant monitoring system for monitoring the cradle to monitor the posture of an infant using an alert mechanism.

Non intrusive system for detecting exercise posture

Currently available technical approaches to detect exercise posture have a number of limitations. These range from manufacturing to sensing accurate points of contact between a user and the exercise mat. This leads to a decrease in reliability and efficiency of the systems available. The patent proposes a method for accurate deteection of posture using an exercise mat having sensors coupled with a wearable device such as a smart watch/band.

Method for monitoring exercise posture

Maintaing the correct posture is a critical part of any exercise, and failure to do so can lead to serious injuries to the body. Existing technologies and devices to monitor posture are not entirely accurate, leading to bodily harm. The patent proposes an improved method to monitor the exercise posture of an individual by making use of a flexible substrate (mat) and a wearable device equipped with sensors to detect posture.

Improved Spectrometer and a method to measure special characteristics of an object

Two aberrations or distortions are commonly found in the designs made by a conventional spectrometer lens. Hence there is a need to have an optical system in which both of these distortions are removed. This patent describes an improved spectrometer and a novel method to measure the spectral characteristics by using a single aberration-corrected lens or mirror system such that the light passes through or reflects component once.

Portable & energy efficient refrigeration device for transporting vaccines

Cooler boxes used to transport vaccines have no constant temperature monitoring system available. The refrigeration devices are bulky and need large amounts of power and space while transportation. This patent describes a lightweight portable refrigeration device to transport temperature sensitive objects using a cooling chamber with a refrigeration mechanism.

Turning India's agricultural waste into eco-friendly bio-bricks

Burning agricultural waste is one of the major causes of pollution in India. Instead, this agro-waste can be used as the construction material to overcome the shortage of conventional building equipment raised due to rapid urbanisation. This patent proposes the art for making an eco-friendly bio-brick from agricultural waste that can be used to build a non-load-bearing wall.

Device for automatic controlled expansion and compression of Ambu bag

AMBU-bags are self-inflating bags primarily used for keeping a patient respirated during movement from one location to another or during procedures such as CPR. It is necessary to supply the patient with large quantities of oxygen. However, untrained persons are often asked to perform manual resuscitation due to lack of trained staff. The patent proposes a mechanical ventilation device to mimic resuscitation from a trained person.

Continuous non-invasive monitoring of bilirubin

When red blood cells break down, a substance called bilirubin is formed. Babies are not easily able to get rid of the bilirubin and it can build up in the blood and other tissues and fluids of the baby's body. Presently, there is no point-of-care system available to measure the baby’s bilirubin level at home, at certain pre-defined intervals. The patent proposes a method to monitor bilirubin levels at home without using invasive techniques.
