OVERVIEW

NASSCOM CoE-IoT is back with the 2nd edition of the Enterprise Innovation challenge. The theme for EIC-2 is Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) and CoE intends to map the progress and discuss more inventiveness in the services and strategies. This platform psyched up to bring industry experts, researchers, academia, startups, and government under one roof to discuss the pressing opportunities and challenges framed by the implementation of ESG!

NASSCOM CoE’s Enterprise Innovation Challenge-a first-of-its-kind initiative dedicated to spurring the industry engagements and developing collective capabilities to solve real-world challenges using technology-based innovations. The core objective of EIC is to exercise the innovations brought about by the Indian entrepreneurs and endorse the sustained engagement between Enterprises & Innovative Startups.

This season of EIC envisages discussing the keynotes and use cases concerning Green IT & Cloud, Workplace Analytics, Supply chain sustainability, carbon –offsetting, and so forth. We are looking forward to the participation of great leaders and promising startups from across the verticals and understanding their views on ESG.

This technology, innovation, and ESG themed rendezvous and detailed deliberation & evaluation will open up new potentials, holistically approached, and significant parameters to overcome the unforeseen risks.

Partner Usecase

GHG Emission Reduction In Value Chain - Neutral Spirit

Distillation is the fundamental process for manufacture of alcohol, derived from agri-based feedstock. Heating requirements is important of distillation process sequency which is impart contributor in the overall GHG emission inventory of Neutral Spirit production.  In the pursuit of Net Zero emission target, it is critical to reduce the GHG emission from Spirit production. Bio-fuel and Bio-mass use is being used as a proven cost effective alternate to fossil fuel use across the industries. Hence it is required to

Identify renewable fuel and Bio-Fuel availability in the vicinity of supplier distillation facilities & explore use of Bio-fuels to supplement Fossil Fuel (Coal) within the scope of the supplier’s existing infrastructure

identify clean and renewable energy (e.g., Solar) sources to meet distillation process heat requirement and to integrate the technology that can be capable of storing and optimize the clean energy use.

Environmental sustainability – thermal renewable energy

Thermal energy contributes around 50% to the total energy requirement of our sites as the same is widely used in our manufacturing facilities, labs and offices, in a variety of forms such as boilers, stream, sterilization, and treatment plants etc. The thermal energy demand of our manufacturing sites ranges from 25 GWh to 250 GWh per annum. Natural gas and diesel are the two major sources of thermal energy generation at our sites, contributing significantly to our unsolved source of carbon emissions. We are therefore looking for scalable and reliable alternatives to natural gas, diesel, and other carbon-generation sources to produce thermal energy. This new alternative must act as good source of thermal energy – with no carbon emissions associated with fossil fuel combustion. The solution must be implementable to existing equipment (e.g. boilers) with ease.

Market transformation towards Sustainable Palm Oil in India

In spite of being the largest importer and second largest consumer of palm oil globally, the uptake of sustainable palm oil (oil palm that is certified sustainable) in India remains extremely low, and related data publicly unavailable. This hampers public visibility and stifles awareness about sustainable palm oil in India among various stakeholders. Further, consumers especially youth in India are increasingly driving buying decision-making (especially in consumer facing segments like fashion, apparel, retail, electronics, etc.), yet remain poorly informed about the social and environmental impacts of unsustainably sourced palm oil. This is a lost opportunity as far as market transformation towards sustainable palm oil is concerned, especially by engaging youth millennials.

One of the key challenges in enabling better uptake of sustainable palm oil is price sensitivity in this extremely competitive market (edible oil market) in India. The other challenge is that over 95% of the palm oil used/consumed in India is imported (mainly from Indonesia and Malaysia). There is low awareness about adverse impacts of unchecked palm oil expansion on forests and biodiversity (especially rainforests of Indonesia and Malaysia). Finally it is not common knowledge that palm oil is used across most consumer goods that we use on a daily basis.
